OPELOUSAS, LA (NBC33) — An Opelousas Police officer died this weekend after she crashed her vehicle while she was driving to work.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 14 shortly before 5:00 a.m. We’re told Assistant Warden Peggy Sylvester, 50, was driving an Opelousas Police unit north on Highway 31 when she attempted to pass another car and lost control of her vehicle.
Reports indicate that Sylvester went off the road and struck a ditch, her vehicle then slammed into a tree. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators noted the rainy conditions and believe that could have contributed to the crash.
Sylvester was a 14-year veteran of law enforcement. She’s worked for several different agencies throughout the Acadiana area, including the Eunice Police Department and the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. She was the mother of three children.
The crash remains under investigation.
