Baton Rouge, La — Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful (KBRB) has been named April’s “Affiliate of the Month,” by Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB), the state’s nonprofit organization dedicated to litter prevention, waste reduction, and community improvement. KBRB was selected as Affiliate of the Month in recognition of their commitment to the cleanliness of the city of Baton Rouge and efforts among the school systems to educate the community on litter reduction.
“Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful is one of our hardest working affiliates,” Leigh Harris, Executive Director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful, said. “They have done an amazing job to help spread the word and inspire more to join the fight against litter.”
KBRB has worked to educate the community about the environmental and economic impact litter has on the community. Through the “Waste in Place” curriculum, funded by KLB grants, KBRB has hosted and trained the most teachers in the state to take the anti-litter message back to their classrooms. By teaching their students how litter affects the community and what they, as students and citizens of Baton Rouge, can do to properly dispose of their waste, they in turn hope the students will begin to teach their family and friends about litter.
KBRB also works to maintain the Louisiana State University lakes as a place for students and citizens to enjoy by using the site for their annual Beach Sweep waterways cleanup event on the third Saturday in September.
In 2012, KBRB revamped a vacant lot in North Baton Rouge by planting new tress, mulching the entire area and building a bus cover for residents in the neighborhood. To ensure that the grass and trees are taken care of, KBRB intends to revisit the site annually. Additionally, KBRB hosts a flowerpot program, which assists with the improvement of the downtown area each spring by planting seasonal plants, refreshing flowers and mulching soil.
KBRB has been a Keep America Beautiful affiliate since 1983 and has won many awards including a KAB Innovative Award in 2009, a Lowe’s and KAB Community Improvement Grant, and a KAB and UPS Community Improvement Grant. In 2010, KBRB received a cigarette litter prevention program grant for downtown Baton Rouge.
“Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful is honored to be recognized by Keep Louisiana Beautiful as the Affiliate of the Month for April,” Gwen Emick, Director of KBRB, said. “This honor highlights the hard work that KBRB has done and continues to do in the community to address the litter issue in our neighborhoods. KBRB appreciates all the hard work that businesses, neighborhoods and the leaders of the community have done to strive toward a cleaner, more beautiful city.”
KLB honors hardworking affiliate organizations throughout the state each month. The affiliate of the month is selected based on specific criteria that make that affiliate community stand out among its peers.
