Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The mayor of New Orleans says the state is taking the wrong approach to balancing the budget.
Mitch Landrieu spoke to the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge today.
For this legislative session, he supports bills that will reduce costs in New Orleans. He wants to cut back on pension payments, and reduce the number of juvenile court judges in his city.
However, he took a shot at state lawmakers about their own budget cuts, saying they use the wrong process to make decisions.
"The question is: do you do it with a scalpel or do you do it with a hammer? Do you do it immediately,” said Landrieu,“ or do you do it over time? My answer is you do it with a scalpel and you do it over time."
Landrieu did not talk about the Orleans Parish Prison today. He asked the federal government to take it over, after a video surfaced showing prisoners inside with guns, drugs, and alcohol.
