ASCENSION PARISH, LA (NBC33) — On May 4, 2013, residents of Ascension Parish will vote in a special election on a $3.5 million tax to provide support to the District 1 fire service. However, a recent letter enticing residents to vote against the proposal has sparked major controversy.
The letter in question was composed by members of the Ascension Republican Parish Executive Committee and was mailed to all members of the Ascension Parish Chamber of Commerce. However, officials with the Chamber of Commerce have stated that they are not in support of the letter and were not instrumental in it being sent out.
Fire officials in turn contacted The Creole – Ascension Parish Online Newspaper – asking for a review of the facts contained within the letter.
In an article published on Wednesday, April 10, the paper takes readers through the letter line by line. They point out several discrepancies and inaccuracies that can be construed as propaganda.
