IBERIA PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Over 18 pounds of marijuana is off the streets tonight in Iberville Parish. Deputies found the stuff in a spot many people think is often overlooked.
Brandon "Juan" Wright is accused of trying to sell 18 pounds of marijuana, only feet away from Sherry Jones' house.
"I've lived on this street for 22 years and this is the first I’ve heard or seen people get busted or big time drugs like that," said Sunshine resident, Sherry Jones.
Deputies say the drugs have a street value of over 50 thousand dollars.
"This marijuana, within 2 hours of after we need this search it would have been on the streets in St. Gabriel and East Iberville," said Iberville Sheriff, Brett Stassi.
Jones lives in east Iberville parish. It's a spot many say is neglected by deputies.
“They told me sometimes that the East Iberville felt like the red headed step child but I want to make sure we brought that to rest and that won’t be the case," noted Sheriff Stassi.
But Jones says busts like this one go to show parts of the parish like Sunshine need to be patrolled more frequently.
“I mean there is a lot of children around here you know and you never know they could be distributing it to the young children," noted Jones.
A message the Sheriff's Office has gotten. Now, deputies along with St. Gabriel police are doing what they can to keep sherry’s neighborhood safe, secure and free of drugs.
“They deserve to have the same law enforcement through the parish as we do on this side,” said Sheriff Stassi.
Wright was arrested and booked into the Iberville parish jail but bailed out. He has an extensive criminal history and will be face several felony charges.
