CHALMETTE, LA (NBC33) — A homeless couple was arrested after they allegedly left six young children in a vehicle with loaded handguns while they went inside a store to shop.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Shelve Smith, 27, and Regina Lee, 24, for child desertion after leaving the minors in the car alone for roughly 20 minutes on Monday, April 1.
Officials say the children ranged in age from 7-years-old to 5-months-old. A passer-by noticed the children alone in the vehicle and contacted a sheriff’s deputy, who was working an extra duty security detail at the store.
The deputy reviewed surveillance video to determine the length of time that the children were left alone. Smith and Lee acknowledged that the children were theirs and that they did not have a home address. They were both arrested and charged with Child Desertion.
A family member was contacted and took custody of the children. The vehicle was then impounded. A gun was then located between the driver’s seat and the console and a second gun was located between the passenger seat and the console. They were recovered during a mandatory search of the vehicle during impound.
