JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A woman’s boyfriend was arrested for injuring her 2-year-old daughter so badly she was in critical condition for nearly a week. Investigators say he eventually confessed to the crime and after he was arrested, the child died.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred on Friday, March 15. The 2-year-old child, Darionne Taylor, was suffering from head injuries, severe swelling to the forehead and a large bite mark on her back. She was originally treated at a local hospital, but was then transferred the next day to Tulane University Hospital for continued treatment.
Investigators learned that the child was left in the care of the mother’s boyfriend, Cyril Jones, 23. When questioned, Jones claimed that the child was jumping on the bed and fell off, causing the injuries.
After several interviews, Jones eventually admitted to causing the trauma. He said, “I just clicked out,” and he lost his temper because Darionne was not listening to him.
Jones admitted that he had caused the bite mark prior to the major incident. He said he was trying to get the child to go to sleep, but Darionne continued to jump on the bed. She did fall from the bed, but he then picked her up, shook her violently and told her not to jump on the bed. He said he carried the child to the kitchen where she began to go unconscious. He then put water on her face and she began convulsing. That’s when he called 911.
Jones was arrested and booked with 2 counts of Second-Degree Cruelty of a Juvenile. He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correction Center.
On Thursday, March 21, Darionne died as a result of her injuries. Jones was rebooked and his charges were upgraded to Second-Degree Murder.
