BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Southern University students walk into class Friday morning, a little down but still proud of the way their men’s basketball team played Thursday. The jags lost to the number one seed Gonzaga Bulldogs 64 to 58.
Dozens of students came out to a campus showing of the game Thursday. Southern Jags fans got a workout Thursday night watching their team try and bust brackets. Fans were up and down hoping their team could come out with a win.
Kenneth Davis, Southern University student, said, "It was great like the energy in here was awesome. I’m extremely proud of my school just being able to stick in there."
16 seed Jags went up against 1 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs. Southern fans never once gave up or called themselves underdogs.
Taylor Ferguson, Southern University student, explained, “I just like seeing Beltran hitting all the threes. Guys actually scoring points in the paint against Gonzaga's big men man it was really impactful."
"I was always at the edge of my seat. I was like one more shot, just one more shot. that's what i kept repeating in my head. But, it was a fantastic game. it was amazing," Willie Williams, Southern University student, said.
The close game ended with the Bulldogs on top.
Judy Martin-Davis, Southern University super fan, explained "That’s what we do we're tough enough to over top. We go out there and we are in it to win it. Hey win lose or draw we are still winners. We’re go-getters. We're heavy hitters."
"They had the defense. They had the offense, but we just couldn't. They just wasn't given us our calls that we needed that were essential," Williams described.
The Jaguar nation may be out of the big dance, but they're walking away proud.
"Feel like even though we lost. We had a moral victory just off of the fact that they were the number one team in the nation and a lot of people counted us out, but you can't count out an under dog at times like this," Davis said.
Jags fans say the team did so well this year they're pumped for next season. They say the men’s team could go all the way to number one!.
