BROUSSARD, LA (NBC33) — Two people were killed in a crash last night after a driver ran a red light.
The Broussard Police Department reports that the crash occurred at roughly 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle run a red light on Ambassador Caffery, causing it to collide with an oncoming car traveling down US Hwy 90.
Officials say the Pontiac Bonneville that ran the light was being driven by Heather M. Covington, 36, of New Iberia. Her passenger was Terry Richard, 51, of Rayne. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash only sustained minor injures and his passenger did not report any injuries.
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol was a factor in this crash, nor do they have a reason why Covington would have disregarded the stop light. The crash is still under investigation.
