BATON ROUGE, LA — The Southern men’s basketball team has played 30 games to this point. But their real season won’t begin until Friday when they play in the SWAC tournament. The Jags will be eyeing their first NCAA tournament berth since the 2005-06 season.
“We are only two wins away from satisfying our season,” said point guard Jameel Grace.
“We still have a lot of work to be done but we are glad where we are,” added second year head coach Roman Banks.
Two wins is all that separates the Southern men and the big dance.
“Without the two wins we feel like our season was nothing,” Grace said.
Just last year the program was banned from the postseason for poor academics. Head coach Roman Banks has the team back on the right track.
“I think it is huge. There is no way in the world that we thought we would be here this soon. Our seniors need to be seniors. They don’t have any tournament experience but they have leadership abilities. They need to bring that to the court with us,” said Banks.
It’s senior like Grace, who have been on a roller coaster ride since arriving on campus four years ago, who are being asked to step up.
“You can say that we don't have any tournament experience but at the same time we are the same players who put us in this position. We just have to make sure we play good basketball and put ourselves up in the rafters,” the senior said.
Southern will take on the winner of the Alabama A&M/Grambling game Friday at 8 p.m.
The winner will advance to the SWAC tournament championship game Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
