IBERIA PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Two people died Saturday night in a head-on collision that was caused by a driver who attempted to pass another vehicle.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident occurred on March 9 at roughly 5:30 p.m. We’re told Joel Morvant, 24, of New Iberia, was driving south on LA Hwy. 85 when he attempted to pass another vehicle. Morvant struck another vehicle being driven by Gregory Landry, 54, of Lafayette, head-on.
The impact of the crash was so severe it caused Landry’s vehicle to catch fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Morvant, who was restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in his vehicle, Cody Snyder, 27, of New Iberia, was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
A toxicology test is being performed on Morvant to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol. Troopers say 62% of the fatal crashes in Troop I during 2012 were caused by impaired drivers.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
