LOUISIANA STATE POLICE — Sunday shortly before 1:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 1148 west of LA Hwy 1 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of Plaquemine resident Lamar R. Phillips,38.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Phillips was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala westbound on LA Hwy 1148. For unknown reasons, Phillips failed to negotiate a right hand curve. His Impala ran off the roadway to the right and struck a tree.
Despite the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt, Phillips sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Impairment is unknown at this time. Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Phillips to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road.
