NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A 35-year-old man with a history of violence was arrested for allegedly beating a man to death and burying his body in St. Bernard Parish.
The New Orleans Police Department arrested Michael Vicknair for the murder of Jeffrey Bonck, Sr. The investigation began after police located Bonck’s body was unearthed and identified last week through the efforts of the NOPD, St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, St. Bernard Parish Public Works Department, LSU FACES Laboratory and the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office.
Bonck’s family reported him missing last August, and the case was taken on by Seventh District Detective Debra Normand, who was assisted by Detective Steven Williams.
After conducting several interviews as well as receiving an informative tip, detectives had reason to suspect Vicknair had committed murder, and promptly alerted St. Bernard Sheriff’s deputies that they had reason to believe the remains of a possible New Orleans murder victim (later identified as Bonck) had been buried in a particular wooded area of their parish. An excavation of the site was conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
“I’m incredibly proud of the work done by so many of our detectives who stayed focused on this case from the very beginning and saw it through. This was a great effort by Detectives Normand and Williams in the Seventh District as well as our Cold Case Homicide detectives,” Superintendent Ronal Serpas, New Orleans Police Department, said. “And our team could not have arrived at making a solid case and arrest without the generous support of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, the LSU lab technicians as well as the work performed by the Orleans Coroner’s Office. We sincerely appreciate their help and dedication.”
Michael Vicknair was arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder and Obstruction of Justice. He has previously been arrested for Aggravated Battery, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile, Child Desertion and Driving on a Suspended Driver’s License.
