BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Teeing off with a beer could soon become reality at public golf courses in Baton Rouge.
BREC wants the option to serve alcohol to customers. Officials say it would help the public golf courses more competitive with private golf clubs in the area. It could also open the doors to more tournaments.
"I think it helps them compete with some of the other courses that are around that offer beer,” Mike Vermaelen, an avid local golfer, said. “Especially Santa Maria. You know Santa Maria does offer beer and I think it's a choice and you don't have to drink if you don't want to."
Another part of the proposed ordinance would make it easier to get alcohol permits for special events at BREC facilities. The metro council will have to vote on the issue.
