Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois wants to inform the public that on July 18, 2010, Sunday night Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office detectives made an arrest in reference to a domestic murder investigation. Detectives arrested Bernard Franklin Verrett, age-41, for second degree murder of his wife, Kristi Verrett age-38.
On July 17, 2010 Saturday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. Terrebonne Parish deputies responded to 110 Morello Court Houma in reference to a welfare concern. Deputies made contact with the 19 year old man who informed deputies that he had not heard from his mother since 3:00 a.m. Deputies received information that the mother and father of the complainant were involved in a verbal altercation and they left home during the early morning hours. The father later returned home and his wife was not with him.
At this point TPSO deputies and detectives began their missing person investigation. Deputies patrolled different areas of Terrebonne Parish and were unsuccessful with locating the husband or wife. The La. State Police and Houma Police Department also assisted in the search.
On July 18, 2010, Sunday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m. TPSO deputies located Bernard Verrett walking on Grand Caillou Rd. in the area of the Bobtown Community. Verrett was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office where detectives questioned him.
During the interview of Verrett he confessed to killing his wife and dumping the body on Savanne Rd. He directed detectives to the location on Savanne Rd. where the victim's body was found. TPSO detectives found the victim's body in the marsh area of the 2200 block of Savanne Rd. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene; Verrett died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
Detectives also located the couple's Toyota Corolla that the suspect drove into the Houma Navigational Canal in the Dulac area after committing the murder. The couple had three children together; a 19 year old male, 16 year old male female and a 12 year old male. The victim worked at Wal-Mart in the deli department while the suspect was unemployed.
Bernard Franklin Verrett remains in the Terrebonne Parish Jail with no bond for second degree murder. Verrett arraignment date is set for August 26, 2010.
