WATSON, LA (NBC33) — Have an old hat lying around or some piling up in your closet? One Watson boy has something for you to do with them.
Zach Morgan is not your average 2nd grader; he's using his passion for baseball caps to help bring a smile to sick kids’ faces.
"It's going to make me feel good because it's really good for the little kids," Zach said.
He started collecting the hats to give to children with childhood illness and people are starting to take notice.
"He's actually shipping a hat out today to a little boy and 8 year-old who is battling leukemia his mom reached out to us and were thrilled to be able to do it and that's what its all about," says Zach’s mother, Sandy.
After his mother found a grant online called Disney Friends for Change, she knew it was the perfect chance for the family to help give back.
"So we started talking to him about ideas that he had and he's really passionate about his baseball caps," says Sandy Morgan.
So with hats in mind, Zach came up with the perfect idea, Lidz for Kidz .
“Several St. Judes commercials on TV and through talking with my husband and I about it, that's kind of what he decided to do, he wanted to donate baseball caps to the kids," noted Sandy.
So the children with cancer at Our Lady of the Lake will soon receive hats from "Zach’s Lidz for Kidz." With the help of Facebook, the project has reached more people than the Morgan’s could have ever imagined.
"Social media is the way to go we started a Facebook page and it basically took off we have gotten tons of donations already," says Sandy Morgan.
Once Zach’s project collects 100 hats, he will deliver them to the children along with a little something else. “I want to give theme pizza and a movie," says Zach Morgan.
There will be a number of hat drives over the next few weeks, including this Saturday at the Watson Walmart. Also, NBC33 will be there when Zach delivers his hats to the children at Our Lady of the Lake.
