BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — October 26, 2012.
That’s the last time Tyrann Mathieu says he used drugs.
“I think I have something to look back on. Some of those experiences that I have gathered over this past year are going to help me,” Mathieu said at the NFL scouting combine.
He says his bad habits are in the rearview. And so is that nickname he’s commonly referred to by.
“If the Honey badger sticks, it sticks. But right now I am focused on being Tyrann Mathieu,” he said.
That’s the name NFL coaches will call the 5’9” defensive back whose career college career was cut short.
“I thought my bottom was when I got kicked out of school. But when I was arrested in October it was a new bottom,” the former Heisman trophy finalist said.
Tuesday, Mathieu will get the chance to perform in front of every NFL team.
“I want them to look at me and see me for who I am and that's a football player. That's the right kind of person to be,” he said.
Even as low as his lows may have been, Mathieu has a golden opportunity knocking at his door.
“I'm not focused on money right now. I just want to play football again. My whole life I played for free so to play for a few hundred thousand dollars it's still football to me,” said Mathieu.
After the scouting combine Mathieu is expected to workout at LSU’s Pro Day on March 27.
