A 2004 Honda Accord, driven by Brandon Smith, 22, of New Iberia, was stopped a red light on US Highway 90 east at Southeast Boulevard. Jones failed to stop and struck Smith’s vehicle from the rear.
Jones was restrained and sustained no injuries. Smith and the three other occupants of his vehicle were restrained. The fourth occupant, Laura Walker, 44, of New Iberia, died as a result of her injuries at the scene. She was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish Coroner.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind drivers and passengers, that Louisiana Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce the risk of injuries in most crashes.
