SCOTLANDVILLE, La (NBC33) — Crews are still working to find out where the smell of natural gas is coming from in Scotlandville.
Area residents said that the smell was a lot stronger last night and died off early this morning. Entergy received more than 80 calls about the smell.
Also, three schools were evacuated earlier today. Students say the smell inside the school was similar to that of a gas station.
When Tenique Edwards went to school today she did not expect her day to be cut short. “When I got to school, we went to the cafeteria, and that's when they told us to go to the gym," stated Edwards. “ All the students were saying it smelled like gas in our school. I just thought that I needed to call my momma."
After being moved back and forth inside the school, students were gathered in the gym for a few hours to wait.
“The smell it was around the whole school,” said student Emanuel Allen. “Since it was around the whole school, we had to go back to the gym.”
Then, the students were sent to another school a few miles away to wait for their parents, but with no idea what was going on. Teniques's mother, Pamela, was less than pleased.
“I was in a rage. I didn’t know anything about it. My daughter just called and told me they evacuated the school, and I didn't know what to do,” stated the mother. “I was hysterical because I had to get there to get my baby. I didn't know where to go."
Students say the smell that lingered in the air smelled heavily of gas and was nothing you could ignore.
Parents like Pamela say they it’s better to be safe than sorry, and is happy her daughter is safe and sound. “I’m here now, so I feel much better now. I was terrified," said Pamela.
The three schools that were evacuated were JK Haynes Elementary and Charter School, Crestworth Learning Academy and Crestworth Elementary.
The school district says they will go back into the school after the Mardi Gras holiday on Wednesday to make sure everything is okay. There, they will decide on whether or not the kids will return to class.
