BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — For 16 years, Southern University professor David Porter has poured over one of the oldest books in the English language.
His years of study are paying off - with a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Porter says his research will find out the origins of written English.
He says the ancient English encyclopedia he's studying is fascinating and has a surprisingly high amount of recognizable words we use today.
"It has a huge range of vocabulary - it's 3,000 words on every conceivable topic: animals, ships, trees, birds, fish, weapons, you name it,” stated Porter. “It's extremely valuable."
Porter says the grant will let him study and write about the development of some of our most used words in the English language.
