BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Earl K Long Medical Center is closing early. The hospital is now closing in April.
The original plan was for the hospital to shut its doors in November. But officials say because they were losing so many employees, 1300 over the last year and a half alone, moving up the closure date just made sense. Greenstein says despite this loss of manpower, the transfer of inpatient services from E.K.L. to Our Lady of the Lake will mean that patients can likely expect better medical care.
"We still maintain the clinics throughout the community, so access continues. And we'll run the facilities that we have, our clinics, likely more efficiently, having better though put [and] more productivity in the same clinic. So, we're hoping to be able to see even more patients with the same footprint," states Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein.
Hospitals in Lafayette, Houma, Lake Charles and New Orleans are also taking part in public-private partnerships.
