BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Today the Louisiana High School Athletic Association voted to change the way the football playoff format is structured.
The change will separate public and private schools in the postseason. Many public schools wanted the change to help level the playing field.
The proposition passed by a 206 to 119 margin will separate the non-select schools and select schools. The "select" schools would include mostly private schools, while "non-select" schools would be primarily traditional public schools.
"They are all looking for that elusive level playing field because the other schools can draw kids from further away and maybe even by federal court order what their attendance zone may be," Kenny Henderson, LHSAA Executive Director, said.
The ruling will go into effect this year. Nothing can be changed from this controversial vote until this time next year at the LHSAA annual convention.
