BATON ROUGE, LA — The first day of class for the 2013 Spring Semester at Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) has been moved to Monday, January 28, due to a campus wide power outage. Classes were originally scheduled to start Tuesday, January 22.
The power outage that shut down the campus on Monday has left the majority of college offices on the main campus closed during the week.
The outage was caused when the college’s underground electrical distribution system was infiltrated by water, following the heavy rains experienced in the area over the past two weeks.
In addition to moving the first day of classes, BRCC has also extended the registration deadline and the payment deadline through Thursday, January 24.
"We want to ensure our students are able to complete the registration process," said Steve Mitchell, Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Media Relations.
"While our online registration system has remained open during the outage, our campus offices have been closed for several days, and we want our students to have every opportunity to finalize their plans for the new semester," said Mitchell.
The college is working to assess and repair the damage. Offices on the main campus will remain closed until further notice.
BRCC encourages students to stay connected through the college’s online and social media outlets.
