LOUISIANA — With the possibility of continued heavy rain and flooding in the forecast, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced that the department staff is prepared to deal with severe weather and hazardous road conditions. DOTD will continue monitoring the roadways for possible flooding and close any roads as needed.
Since the onset of severe weather, more than 733 DOTD staff members are responding to storm related work in the affected areas, utilizing more than 342 trucks, 253 barricades and 403 high water signs. Due to flooding, high water signage is being deployed and roads are being closed and opened as necessary.
Additionally, crews have removed 37 fallen trees and 755 cubic yards of debris from roadways, applied 2 tons of cold mix and repaired 2 movable bridges.
DOTD urges motorists to use extra caution when traveling on roadways during hazardous weather conditions and stay off the roads whenever possible.
Drivers should also be aware of potholes that have developed due to flooding. DOTD maintenance forces are monitoring these areas and additional manpower and resources have been dedicated to perform repairs. Crews will be making temporary fixes during evening hours and drivers can expect more permanent repairs as the rain subsides.
During severe weather conditions, motorists should drive slowly and carefully, avoid driving while distracted, and avoid driving through standing water. Always allow for extra driving time, reduce speeds when visibility is low, and make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles. As always, DOTD reminds motorists to buckle up and refrain from drinking and driving.
