PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a female who had been arrested for a criminal violation.
Officials say Deputy Elijah D. Gary, 29, was arrested on Friday, Jan. 11 for the crime, which allegedly occurred back in November. The female victim claims that Deputy Gary assaulted her while he was on duty and in the process of booking her as a prisoner.
DNA evidence was collected from the victim and from Gary. It was analyzed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The evidence implicated Gary and he was arrested and charged with Sexual Battery and Malfeasance in Office – Sexual Conduct.
“When I was elected Sheriff, I pledged transparency to the public,” Sheriff Lonnie Greco, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “As I have previously stated, members of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office will be held to a high standard and, if they commit a crime, they will be held accountable for their actions.”
Gary was terminated from his position at the time of his arrest. He began working for the agency in July 2007 and was assigned to Second District Patrol Division.
