BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A big time showdown in the SWAC looms for the Southern Jaguar men’s basketball team who are still perfect in conference play. Saturday will be a chance to separate from the pack and gain sole possession of first place. The fast start has been “pleasantly surprising” for second year head coach Roman Banks. But in college basketball it’s not you start, it’s how you finish. Banks understands that.
"I don't want to get into a relaxed state. I don’t want the guys to get into a relaxed state because we have seen teams start hot and they didn’t finish so well," he said.
But if the Jags end the SWAC part of their schedule like they’ve began, the Jaguar Nation could be in for a special year.
“I think as the season has been progressing guys are starting to come into their own a little bit,” he added.
One of those guys is junior college transfer Malcolm Miller who was named SWAC player of the week for his two 26 point outings a week ago.
“My teammates have been doing a good job of finding me in some good spots and I have just been trying to stay consistent as possible,” the soft-spoken Miller said Thursday.
He’s been a big spark plug off the bench for the team and a huge factor in the teams four game win streak to start SWAC play. The Texas native is averaging just over 21 points a contest in his first season as a Jaguar.
“I just try to take as many good shots as possible just to try and help my team get going when they are in a slump,” Miller said.
The other spark Southern hopes to get this Saturday is the home crowd support.
“We need our fans to come out and support us. We have been on the road quite a bit and we have seen the tough crowds. We are looking to being at home and showing our guys some love and getting on the other team pretty good,” Banks said with a smile.
Tipoff for Saturday’s game is slated for 4 p.m. The Lady Jaguars, who are 3-1 in the SWAC, will tipoff at 2 p.m. Tickets are seven dollars.
