LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — Lafayette Parish's unemployment rate is now down to three percent, which is the fourteenth lowest unemployment rate in the United States, and is the lowest in the state. Lafayette has had the lowest unemployment rate in the state in 10 out of the last 11 months.
"Lafayette's extremely resilient. It's amazing that the people in Lafayette have grown jobs through entrepreneurial activity, really more than large businesses and that's the real key here. Certainly oil and gas is big, medical industry is big, but the truth is we have a lot of confidence in our economy and so we feed off of the medical and oil and gas industry and grow a lot of service sector jobs," says Gregg Gothreaux, president and CEO of LEDA.
Another great statistic for Lafayette Parish, in the last year from November of 2011 to November of 2012, the area created 15,000 new jobs. This is the largest increase by percentage in the United States in new jobs.
