Peter Shire will give an informal tour of the exhibit during the opening of the show on Sunday, February 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A Slice of Life in South Louisiana: 1890 – 1920
March 1–April 7
This exhibit explores the lives of Louisiana’s diverse population at the turn of the 20th century, as America’s developing urban environment began to challenge the Deep South’s traditional rural lifestyle. The show will focus on the lives of four cultural groups from this time period: rural African-Americans, Native Americans, middle class New Orleanians, and Italian Americans. The selection of items will be on loan from several Louisiana public and private museums, including the Louisiana State Museum, LSU Rural Life Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, the Historic New Orleans Collection, and the LSU Libraries/Special Collections. This exhibition is partially funded through the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation.
