BATON ROUGE, LA (WNTZ) — Former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards, along with his 34 year-old wife Trina, will star on the small screen in a new reality show on cable channel A&E.
The Governor's Wife, starting on Wednesday, February 27 at 10:00 p.m., will follow the May-December couple's relationship in the Louisiana social scene and glaring media spotlight. The former four-term populist Democratic govenor is no stranger to the public eye.
The 1991 Louisiana governor's race caught national attention due to Edwards and his opposition, Republican white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan wizard David Duke. Bumper stickers were adorned across the state in favor of Edwards, stating, "Vote for the Crook: It's Important," immortalizing his notorious political career. Edwards won the race, his fourth term as governor, in a landslide.
In 2001, Edwards was convicted and served eight years in federal prison for bribery and extorsion charges while serving that fourth term. While in prison, he met his third and current wife, Trina Grimes Scott, after first becoming pen pals. They were married in New Orleans in a small ceremony shortly after his prison term concluded and serving six months in a halfway house.
The Governor's Wife will also feature their ultra-modern blended family. The 85 year-old's two daughters, Anna (62, a four-time divorcée) and Victoria (60, a former showgirl), will give their take on the marriage, while Trina's two teenage sons, Logan (15) and Trevor (13), will keep the household busy. The couple will also attempt to add to their family mix with a child of their own.
Louisiana politics can be colorful, and the series focus on Trina's adjustment into her role as the younger step-matriarch will be the highlight. She enters into the upscale world Edwin leads, and she will fight off the notions in their social circle of being a gold-digger, while getting along with step-daughters twice her age and raising her own two sons.
The Governor's Wife will be the latest in a line of reality shows set in Louisiana over the last few years. Hollywood has cashed in on reality fare featuring Louisiana's citizens, spawing shows Swamp People, Duck Dynasty, Cajun Pawn Stars, Sons of Guns, Rat Bastards, Bayou Billionaires, My Big Redneck Vacation and others.
