LOUISIANA STATE POLICE — Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on LA Hwy 1 south of Addis near the Dow Chemical Plant in West Baton Rouge Parish shortly before 7:00pm. The incident took the life of 36 year old Emmanuelle D. Stewart of Livonia.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that prior to the crash 29 year old Shantel Rogers of Port Allen was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 1 in a 2004 Nissan Maxima. At the same time, Stewart was attempting to cross LA Hwy 1 when he walked directly into the vehicle’s path. Stewart was struck by the Maxima, ultimately causing fatal injuries.
Troopers suspect impairment on the part of Stewart to have been a factor in the crash, and have submitted a toxicology sample to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Impairment on the part of Rogers is not suspected; however, she was cited for operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. This crash remains under investigation.
Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
