NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A 25 year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department is fighting a very different battle these days. Unlike the criminals he’s used to squaring up with, this offender is attacking from within.
Lt. Reginald Jacque was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in September.
“He was having some bronchial issues,” Sgt. Ernest Luster, New Orleans Police Department, explained. “He had some tests done with his lungs and that’s when they found the cancer.”
Doctors determined that the cancer began in his pancreas, then spread to his liver and lymph-nodes. The Stage 4 diagnosis meant that Lt. Jacque needed to take an immediate leave from his position as a supervisor of the street patrol in 8th District.
“As a supervisor, he motivates people to work for him without being forced into doing the job,” Sgt. Luster said. “He’s always given me great advice on and off the job. I consider him to be a father, not just a friend.”
Since receiving his diagnosis, Lt. Jacque has traveled to Texas several times for treatment.
“He will make his fourth trip next month. With every visit it’s a $60 co-pay. He’s also receiving chemo therapy,” Sgt. Luster, noted.
As is the case for many working in law enforcement, Lt. Jacque supplements his income with extra-duty assignments. With his diagnosis, however, he has been unable to work the added shifts, leaving a hole in his income.
“He’s almost exhausted all of his savings,” Sgt. Luster said. “So we decided to do a fundraiser.”
Sgt. Luster called on some friends at Oceana’s Grill on Conti Street to provide a venue for the event. They are contributing the food and beverages for the evening so that all the funds can go to help Lt. Jacque and his family.
“He’s a great guy. As far as his reputation, everyone I’ve spoken to has been active in helping with this because of their great relationship with him,” Sgt. Luster noted. “To know him is to love him.”
Tickets to the fundraiser dinner are $25 per person and covers the cost of the meal as well as an open bar. The event will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
For those who wish to make a donation but cannot attend the fundraiser, you can mail a check payable to Reginald Jacque to the following address:
Attn: Sgt. Ernet Luster

Everything collected at the fundraiser or donated will go to Lt. Jacque and his family.
