SLAUGHTER, LA — This evening shortly after 5:30 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 957 north of LA Hwy 412 in East Feliciana Parish. The crash took the life of 44 year old Baton Rouge resident Herman D. Ricard.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Ricard was driving a 2001 Acura TL northbound on LA Hwy 957. For unknown reasons Ricard failed to negotiate a left hand curve, and his vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway, Ricard overcorrected causing his vehicle to cross back across both lanes of LA Hwy 957. The Acura exited the roadway to the left, struck a utility pole and then struck a tree.
Despite the fact that he was wearing his seatbelt, Ricard sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time; however, excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash. Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Ricard to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
There have been several fatal crashes in the Troop A area during the month of December. Motorists should remain vigilant at all times while behind the wheel and follow all rules of the road. Following the posted speed limit, never driving beyond a vehicle’s capabilities, always driving defensively, and never taking your eyes off the road are just a few ways to increase safety and decrease the chances of a motor vehicle crash occurring.
