Lafayette Parish, La (NBC33) — A man has been charged with the attempted kidnapping of a juvenile female.
During the afternoon of December 30, two deputies with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office were told by patrons of the Cypress Tree Inn that a man was seen trying to kidnap a juvenile.
Deputies found Michael Lynn Hughes, 53, and confronted him. After failing to produce any identification, deputies learned that he had prior warrants and placed under arrest.
After he was detained, deputies asked Hughes about his involvement in the alleged kidnapping. Initially, Hughes denied touching or grabbing the victim.
The juvenile victim positively identified Hughes, saying that he grabbed her arm and started walking south with her; she also stated that she escaped by kicking Hughes. Witnesses confirmed the victim’s testimony.
When questioned again, Hughes stated that he rented an apartment on December 29; on that day, his grandchildren visited him. He became intoxicated and believed that his sister left with the grandchildren.
Hughes stated that when he spoke with the female victim, he was attempting to find his grandchildren. He stated that he didn’t remember whether he grabbed the juvenile’s arm.
Hughes was then charged with Aggravated Kidnapping of a Child. He was already under arrest for warrants for an Expired Driver’s License and Disobeying Controls.
