LAFAYETTE, La — A Lafayette man has been detained on multiple charges after being caught during a burglary.
On Tuesday, December 24, at around 3:20 pm, Lafayette Police responded to the 200 block of Jefferson Street regarding a carjacking. The victim told officers she was in a parking lot when the suspect approached her and demanded that she step away from her vehicle. The victim removed her passenger, and then the suspect climbed into the vehicle and fled the scene. The victims were not injured during the incident.
A short time later, police responded to the 200 block of Sunny Lane regarding a residential burglary. The victim told police she was inside of her residence when a male suspect entered by way of the rear door.
The victim immediately ran from her home and had a neighbor contact police. When police arrived, the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
During the course of the investigation police discovered the vehicle, a white 2002 Mitsubishi, which was taken during the carjacking in the 200 block of Jefferson Street.
The suspect, Elton McCommon, 53, of Lafayette, was found to be responsible for both incidents. McCommon was arrested and charged with Unauthorized Entry into an Inhabited Dwelling, Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle and Carjacking.
