KENNER, LA (NBC33) — A Louisiana State Trooper from Troop B was hit and by a passing vehicle while he was conducting a traffic stop on I-10.
Officials say the incident happened on Saturday, Dec. 22. Lt. Robert Hodges was assigned to patrol during the holiday weekend. He was parked on the right shoulder of I-10 west at mile post 218.5 conducting speed enforcement.
At roughly 7:00 a.m., Lt. Hodges exited the driver’s side door of the LSP vehicle and was standing between the door and the frame of the car. At the same time a 2003 Toyota Corolla, driven by Kirby McCaskill, 20, of Donaldsonville, was traveling in the left lane approaching Lt. Hodges’ location. Traffic in front of McCaskill began to slow down and McCaskill swerved into the right lane and the right shoulder. The Corolla struck Lt. Hodges and the driver’s door.
Lt. Hodges sustained moderate injuries and was transported to East Jefferson Hospital for treatment.
McCaskill voluntarily submitted to a breath test in which no detectable alcohol was found. Following too close and speed are considered factors of the crash and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Motorists are reminded to always remain vigilant while driving and avoid distractions such as eating, cell phones, radios, etc. Due to the holiday weekend, there will be increased traffic on the interstates and surface streets. Always be prepared for sudden stops and allow enough distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping distance greatly increases as speed increases. Also, remember to drive sober and always buckle up. Getting to your destination safely is a priority.
