BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Inmates at the East Baton Rouge Prison who will behind bars this Christmas were still able to give their children gifts today.
Inmates who completed the rehabilitative parenting program this year were able to meet with their children this morning. In addition to the gifts, families got to spend time together.
Miss Louisiana International was also there to help the families reconnect.
One family we spoke with told us it's a big step toward keeping the inmates and their children close.
“This is a surprise to me, you know,” an inmate told NBC33 News. “I wasn't looking to see my kids, but it’s a blessing. It’s a blessing that they still care for me to come up here to see me.”
“I'm so happy that if I can stay in here or we can take him home then I would be happy I would jump up and down,” the child of the inmate added.
Dozens of kids were at the prison to get gifts. It's the first time the prison has had this opportunity for children.
