WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A minor crash turned deadly early this morning. The driver of an 18-wheeler was struck and killed by a passing vehicle while he was attempting to secure his rig from a prior crash.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident occurred at roughly 1:45 a.m. on US Hwy 190 west of La Hwy 1145 in West Baton Rouge Parish. Officials say the victim, Nathan C. Tobias, Jr., 57, of Plaquemine, was slowing his 18-wheeler to turn off the highway when he was struck from behind by another 18-wheeler. Tobias got out of his vehicle to place warning triangles in the roadway to alert passing drivers of the crash, which is when the second crash occurred.
While Tobias was outside another vehicle being driven by a 19-year-old man struck him. Tobias was taken to the Baton Rouge General in Mid-City where he ultimately died as a result of his injuries.
Impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver.
