BATON ROUGE, LA — Wedgewood Elementary School first grader Khamory Gipson, 7, had a long list for Santa this year: video games, a real car and lots more. But topping the list was to have his dad, 1st Lt. Shamory Gipson, home from the Army for Christmas. So when Khamory took Santa’s knee at a holiday event at school today and told Santa what he wanted – his wish was granted.
Shamory was waiting behind Santa’s chair to surprise his son, who hadn’t seen his father since June. Joining them for the homecoming was brother Khyreh, 3, and their mother, Kimberly. Kimberly had been taught as a child by one of the current Wedgewood Elementary teachers. Both sons surrounded their dad for a long overdue hug after the surprise.
The family moved here from Hawaii over the summer, but Shamory stayed behind for military training on an Army base. He has been in training for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in June 2013. Shamory has been on active duty for 15 years.
NBC33's Alex Deiro was there for the special moment. She will have the full story on NBC33 News at 6:30.
