Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge says charitable donations are at an all-time low.
Communications Director Carroll Spruell says donations to Keep Christmas Lights Shining Bright are down close to 60 percent compared last year.
The program, which helps families in need pay utility bills and other services, is in dire need of donations.
"Whether it's the talk about the fiscal cliff, we don't know,” stated Spruell. “But whatever it is, these families who are calling us, they live on the edge of the cliff every day. Just keeping food on the table is a challenge for them."
Spruell says all of the families sponsored for the holiday have been adopted. She went on to say until just last week there were still 100 sponsored families in danger of missing out on any type of Christmas.
