SIMSBORO, LA (NBC33) — A deputy shot a woman yesterday after she held a man at gunpoint, then turned her weapon on the officer.
The Louisiana State Police is currently investigating the incident involving the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office. We’re told it all started when deputies were called to a home in Simsboro shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
When deputies arrived they found the suspect, Alma Thomas, 51, holding a man hostage outside of the residence. Thomas, who was reportedly suicidal, refused to lower her weapon, rather, she turned the gun toward the deputy. Fearing for his safety, the deputy fired at Thomas.
Thomas was struck by at least one bullet and was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport where she is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Once released from the hospital Thomas will be charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.
It is standard procedure to have another agency investigate any shooting incident involving an officer. The Louisiana State Police will review the case to ensure all protocol was followed.
