St. Gabriel, LA (NBC33) — Two people died Tuesday morning after a head-on collision that ended a high-speed chase through Ascension and Iberville parishes.
Janiko Alexander said she had just left the Tanger Outlets in Gonzales shortly after 11:00 a.m. when she noticed a car approaching her very quickly.
"Him coming behind me fast like he was, I was just... I'm a cautious driver. I love my life! So it was real, I could tell it was bad," she said. "Wherever they was going, or whatever they was doing, or whatever speed on their (speedometer), they was doing it. Cause it was... all you seen was dust coming up behind the car."
Gonzales police officers chased the car into St. Gabriel. They asked St. Gabriel officers for assistance, but the suspects crashed into a white pickup truck before they had a chance to arrive.
"Thought there weren't going to be any survivors," said St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau of his first impression of the crash scene. "And sure enough, both the passenger and the driver [of the PT Cruiser[ are deceased.
"I never saw a vehicle hit that hard where the complete motor just come out of the vehicle. Never seen it, and I have 26 years experience. I haven't seen anything like that in my 26 years."
Officers pulled several bags out of the car, most of which had clothing inside. Some items had visible security tags, but officials could not say if all of them were stolen.
"You could tell, they must had stolen a lot of stuff," Alexander said. "Cause the car was full at the back. It was like they had all kind of merchandise back there."
"It's sad on both ends," Ambeau said. "For them to be out doing something like that and then the tragedy, they lose their life afterward."
Ambeau said the two people inside the pickup truck were taken to a hospital in Gonzales, and were reported to be in stable condition.
