Baker, La (NBC33) — The Salvation Army spread a little Christmas cheer today.
The charity organization is teaming up with Toys for Tots to give Christmas gifts to more than 5,000 children this holiday season as part of their Angel Tree program.
Everything from bicycles to mattresses was handed out at the old Wal-Mart in Baker today.
With money tight, parents say it would be almost impossible to give their kids Vhristmas gifts without this help.
“It's hard – you’ve got to pay the bills or buy a toy,” stated parent Margaret Edwards. “So you know what's going to come first - the bills and food have to come first. You’ve got to have shelter over their head."
The Salvation Army has handed out toys to needy families in the Baton Rouge area for more than 100 years.
