ST. GABRIEL, LA (NBC33) — Two people died in a crash that resulted from a high speed police chase with the Gonzales Police Department.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened on LA 30 in St. Gabriel at roughly 11:30 a.m.
Officials say the pursuit began at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Gonzales. Officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle due to a shoplifting complaint. However, the female driver of the vehicle, Kevdrinka Williams of Baton Rouge, attempted to flee police in a PT Cruiser. A male passenger, Tremaine Wickem of New Orleans, was also in the vehicle.
Investigators tell us the driver continued down LA 30 in St. Gabriel going at speeds as high as 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. At some point she passed vehicles by utilizing the shoulder, but lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center lane of the highway, hitting a white pickup truck head on.
The impact of the crash was so severe it forced the motor out of the PT Cruiser. It landed roughly 15 feet away from the crash site.
"I never saw a vehicle hit that hard where the complete motor just come out of the vehicle," Chief Kevin Ambeau, St. Gabriel Police Chief, said. "Never seen it, and I have 26 years experience. I haven't seen anything like that in my 26 years."
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. Wickem was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Officiers recovered stolen and purchased merchandise from the car.
The driver and passenger of the vehicle that was hit are said to be suffering from minor injuries, but are expected to recover.
