NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A Slidell resident is home today after he was detained in South Sudan for nearly two months.
Elton Mark McCabe stepped into the New Orleans International Airport to a tearful reunion with his family and friends.
McCabe and an Iraqi man run a construction and consultant firm. On Oct. 14, they were arrested on allegations of kidnapping an Indian businessman for a $5 million ransom.
The pair denied the charges and said security forces detained them and provided neither medical nor consulate assistance. McCabe and his family maintain the entire situation is a misunderstanding.
McCabe was transferred to four different prisons over a 40 day period of time. During that time he suffered a mild heart attack.
