BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The Baton Rouge Police Department wants to be sure drivers get the message not to drink and drive this holiday season.
It has a pair of DWI checkpoints planned this week: one tonight, Thursday, Dec. 13, and one on Saturday, Dec. 15.
The department says drunk driving increases this time of year, as people celebrate the holidays and they will do whatever is necessary to keep the roads safe.
"If we feel that it needs to be two nights a week, if we feel it needs to be seven nights a week, that's what we'll do, because the bottom line is, if you're choosing to go out and drink, you need to have a designated driver,” Cpl. Tommy Stubbs, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “if you have a designated driver, you will always make it home, it doesn't matter where the checkpoints are."
BRPD says it will increase the number of officers on duty during the holidays to make sure they catch drunk drivers before they cause an accident.
