POINTE COUPEE PARISH (NBC33) — Speed enforcement vans "could" be on the way to Point Coupee Parish. Residents NBC33 talked with say speed's a problem, and this is a no-brainer. And people who live near Livonia say if a speed enforcement van will help save lives, it's worth looking in to.
"Cause they got a lot of people that walk and people that is speeding for whatever," says Larry Davenport. “There has been a lot of accident on the side of the river,” says Bailee Thibadeaux.
These Pointe Coupee Parish drivers hope a 'speed van' will force drivers to hit the breaks on highway 190. "I walk across the street at night when i get off of work at the 18 wheelers be speeding, "says Anita Griffin.
And one Pointe Coupee Police Juror and Parish Paramedic says things need to change. "Along that long corridor of 190 the amount of crashes they have there is a shame that we couldn't do more about that, if we had some proactive enforcement I think you would have less of it,” said Justin Cox.
The Redflex traffic system has been in use in Lafayette. And officials there say, it's helped to reduce "speed' and "crashes". It's been met with opposition, there. Now Cox wants to bring this system to Pointe Coupee.
"The bottom line is this if someone is against this or do not want ticket from this program don't speed and mission accomplished," says Cox. The system takes a picture of your car if you're speeding and you'll get a ticket in the mail. Tickets from the speed van are "civil", not criminal, so it wouldn't impact your record.
Residents say it would be a good move for Pointe Coupee parish. "To prevent a lot more accidents right here so it doesn't get really bad in this area too," says Thibadeaux.
"During holiday time and when we have stuff going on it would help a lot," noted Griffin. And Cox believes, in the end, this program would save lives.
Right now, Parish officials are researching the program. The next step to move forward with this program is to have the parish approve an ordinance. Then Red flex would come in and start enforcement.
