NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Outlet malls are often off the beaten path, but the trip might be worth it, especially during the holidays.
"You can get up to 40 percent off at outlet malls versus the deals that would find at retail stores," says Kiplinger.com's Andrea Browne.
Browne recently wrote on the advantages of outlet mall shopping.
She says many of the biggest brands in retail now have their own outlet stores to sell out-of-season, overstocked or slightly damaged merchandise.
"Slightly damaged meaning there's a slight paint chip, there's a slight crack..in many cases you really can't see it at first glance, you really have to examine the item," she explains.
She also says there are bargains in clothing at outlet malls for the same reasons, with an added bonus if you're buying clothes for Christmas for a child.
"You're not really concerned whether it's going to last you five, six or seven years down the line. So, you buy a ton of stuff cheap for your kids," she advises.
Outlets are typically far outside suburban areas, but rarely too far for faithful holiday bargain hunters.
