ORIGINAL: The Lafayette Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a 3-year-old child. Officials suspect foul play, but have not yet filed any official charges.
“Anytime there’s a death of a young person, you want to make sure you cover your bases,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “Through process of elimination of foul play, you anticipate the worst, but hope for the best. We don’t want to take any chances and miss something.”
Deputies were dispatched to a home on Kaliste Saloom Road at roughly 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 in reference to an unresponsive child. The child was transported to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
“Cause of death is going to determine how we proceed,” Cpt. Judice added. “If the coroner comes back with accidental death, then obviously our investigation will take a different turn. If he comes back with homicide or undetermined, then we will continue our investigation.”
Officials say the child was in the care of the mother’s boyfriend. He does not reside at the home, but was there at the time of the incident.
The identity of the child is being withheld at this time because the biological father, who is out of town, has not yet been notified.
