NBC News — Palestinians rallied in Arafat Square in Ramallah, West Bank, thursday in anticipation of the U.N. vote to recognize a Palestinian state. There's hope in the West Bank that the 193-member General Assembly will accept Palestine on the lands Israel occupied in 1967 as a non-member observer state.
They anticipate broad support for the bid, which is more of a symbolic gesture. It could give the Palestinians leverage in future border talks with Israel and open the way for possible war crimes charges against the Jewish state. The United States, Israel and Germany oppose the move.
