Baton Rouge, LA - United Blood Services today is announcing an urgent appeal for blood donations: Specifically Type O Negative, as well as all Rh Negative blood types re need immediately. We need the community to respond as quickly as possible due to the testing period of each pint of blood. With less than 10 O Negative on the shelf, and low levels of all Rh Negative blood types, we will have to wait an additional two days for that unit of blood to pass testing and be made available for our patients. Now is not the time to put donating blood on the back burner. We need you NOW! More importantly, area patients need your precious lifesaving gift!
"Our blood drive schedules are very light during the summer because colleges and high school are on summer break, and employers who sponsor blood drives have been shot-staffed because of vacations,” said Sarah Williams, Donor Recruitment Supervisor, United Blood Services. "As this area’s non-profit community blood provider, we must maintain an adequate supply of all blood types. At different times of the year, we see a cycle of shortages on certain blood types, which is what we are experiencing today."
